EXPLORING THE EMBOSS RESIST IN OUR MAY CARD MAKING CLASS

Card making offers a wonderful way to express creativity and create personalized keepsakes. In our May class, we focused on a technique that adds depth and interest to handmade cards: emboss resist combined with water colouring. I hope you're inspired to join a class, or maybe even try this technique at home.

What is the Emboss Resist Technique?

Emboss resist is a crafting method where a stamped or heat-embossed design resists ink or paint applied over it. The embossed areas remain clear or white, while the surrounding paper absorbs colour. This contrast creates striking patterns and highlights details beautifully.

In our class, participants stamped images with white embossing ink, applied clear embossing powder, and heated it to create raised, glossy designs. Then, they used a brush to apply water over the surface, and using our Classic Inks from Stampin' Up! dropped colour onto the water. The embossed parts resisted the ink, revealing the design beneath.

Try at Home

If you want to try emboss resist with watercolour, you'll need these supplies:

  • Embossing ink pad and clear embossing powder

  • Heat tool for embossing

  • Watercolour brush and inks

  • Watercolour cardstock - we used 200gsm for the main design and 300gsm for the flowers

  • Stamps of your choice

Start with simple designs and practice controlling watercolour flow. Watch how the embossed areas repel paint and adjust your technique accordingly.
